OUR CLASSES

Whether you are interested in dance as a profession or just for fun, JHS offers a high standard of teaching in a safe, caring environment where we aim to build confidence, develop skills and talents and help our students realise their full potential.

Students study the syllabi of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) in Ballet, Modern, Tap, National and Contemporary. Whilst not compulsory, we encourage children to work towards examinations as a marker of progress and to celebrate their achievements. Pupils are also given the chance to perform in school shows and concerts, with opportunities for competition and festival work for those demonstrating special talent.

  • CLASSICAL Ballet

Good classical ballet technique provides a strong foundation for all other dance genres. Pupils study the Imperial Classical Ballet syllabus of the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) from Primary to Advanced 2 level. Examinations are available to those reaching the required standard.

  • Tap

Exploring and creating rhythms with their bodies makes tap a fun and creative genre. Pupils study the ISTD graded work from Pre-Primary to Advanced 2 alongside the Medal Tests to enhance their technical and performance skills. Examinations are available to those reaching the required standard. We also have our popular Adult Classes for those wishing to learn new skills, have fun and keep fit!

  • Modern

Pupils explore a combination of modern styles (jazz, lyrical, contemporary and musical theatre) through the ISTD syllabus from Primary to Advanced 2. Examinations are available to those reaching the required standard.

  • Jazz

Fun, non-syllabus classes exploring modern jazz styles, giving pupils an opportunity to build confidence and dance like a pop star!

  • NATIONAL

Pupils study folk dance from around the world. A chance to dance with classmates in a fun but structured class, learning not only the dances but also the culture and background of different countries. ISTD examinations available from Primary to Advanced 2 as well as fun Folk Study exams.

  • Contemporary

Contemporary classes encourage creative, free movement developing improvisational skills, technique and fluidity. Pupils are given the chance to express their emotions through breath and movement. Senior students have the opportunity to study for ISTD examinations from Intermediate foundation.

  • Limbering

Body conditioning, stretching and strengthening are important in a young dancer’s training and these classes help provide a strong, safe, supple body as a foundation for all other dance training.

  • Musical Theatre

Fun classes working on dramatic skills and singing in a group environment. Pupils attending this class are given the opportunity to perform numbers rehearsed in class at school concerts.

  • Private Coaching

Private tuition is available to those who want to work on a one to one basis.

My daughter has been dancing at JHS since she was 6 years old. There are some fantastic teachers who always ensure there is a fun and friendly environment to learn and build friendships in. It is a pleasure to be a part of a school that is so dedicated to the students, where my daughter can build confidence but also be provided exceptional dance tuition from highly qualified teachers.’

Most fantastic dance school. Wonderful friends and lovely atmosphere. Can’t recommend highly enough. Dance standards achieved are amazing and opportunities to perform on stage and competitions. It’s my daughter’s second home.

It’s so much more than a dance school. It’s a safe place to express yourself with teachers that encourage and support you to beyond! I am so proud and lucky this school and the people in it are a part of my life. Thank you.

The school has been so welcoming to my son and over the last 8 years he has grown in confidence and maturity as he learns more, develops his dance skills and performs. The school is a real family.
